If you ever work or study with Americans, you might be surprised by how vocal they are. As you know, independence is very important to Americans. From a young age, we’re taught to speak our minds and share our opinions. We believe that discussion and debate are important parts of a functioning society. 

미국 사람과 함께 일하거나 공부해 본 적이 있다면, 미국인이 얼마나 적극적으로 자기 목소리를 내는지 보고 놀랐을 수도 있어요. 알다시피, 독립성은 미국인에게 매우 중요한 가치입니다. 어릴 때부터 자기 생각을 말하고 의견을 나누는 법을 배우죠. 논의와 토론이 사회가 제대로 돌아가는 데 중요한 요소라고 믿습니다. 

Sometimes, people confuse this for Americans being loud or opinionated, but it’s just part of our culture. However, even though we can share our opinions, we still have a polite and respectful way of doing it. 

때로는 이런 모습을 보고 미국인들은 시끄럽고 고집이 세다고 오해하는 사람들도 있지만, 이는 단지 미국 문화의 일부일 뿐이에요. 의견을 나눈다고 하더라도 여전히 정중하고 상대를 존중하는 방식으로 표현합니다. 

When we’re in a meeting, for the most part, we don’t just shout out our thoughts whenever they come to us. Typically, we take notes and wait for our turn to speak. Usually, a boss will give his or her employees a chance to voice their opinions about a new plan or policy. You’re even allowed to turn your boss down if he or she makes a request you don’t agree with. 

회의 중에는 보통 생각이 떠오른다고 해서 곧바로 큰 소리로 말하지는 않습니다. 대개 메모를 하고 발언할 차례를 기다리죠. 보통 상사는 직원들에게 새로운 계획이나 정책에 대해 의견을 말할 기회를 줍니다. 상사의 요청일지라도 동의하지 않으면 거절할 수 있습니다. 

The same is true for students. While we can’t really refuse to do our homework, we can tell a professor if the work seems to be too much. We might also call out a professor for using language that we find offensive or for stating an opinion as a fact. 

학생들도 마찬가지입니다. 과제를 거부할 수는 없지만, 과제가 너무 많다고 생각되면 교수에게 의견을 말할 수 있어요. 또 불쾌감을 주는 언어를 사용하거나 개인적인 의견을 사실인 것처럼 말하는 교수가 있다면 공개적으로 문제를 제기할 수도 있습니다.

I had reverse culture shock when I taught adult Korean students who struggled to share their opinions or participate in group discussions. Most Americans love to tell you how they feel. That being said, there are some shy Americans who prefer to be quiet and hate group projects. There are individuals everywhere.

 저는 성인 한국 학생들과 수업하면서 학생들이 의견을 나누거나 그룹 토론에 참여하는 걸 어려워하는 모습을 보고 역문화 충격을 받았어요. 미국 사람들은 대부분 자신의 감정을 표현하는 것을 좋아합니다. 물론, 조용히 있는 걸 선호하고 그룹 프로젝트를 싫어하는 내향적인 미국인도 있지요. 개인적인 성향은 어디에나 존재합니다.
