✨Concerts in America

미국의 콘서트

I really love live music and have been to a lot of concerts in Korea. I honestly haven’t been to as many in America, but let’s take a look at some of the different ways Korean and American fans enjoy concerts. 

전 라이브 음악을 정말 좋아하고, 한국에서 많은 콘서트에 다녀왔어요. 솔직히 미국에서는 그렇게 많이 가보진 않았는데요, 한국과 미국 팬들이 콘서트를 즐기는 다른 방식에 관해 얘기해 보려고 해요. 

First of all, security is usually much more lax at Korean concerts. In America, you aren’t allowed to bring in big bags. In fact, after the pandemic, most venues only allow see-through bags. You usually cannot bring any kind of food or beverages either. 

우선 한국에서 열리는 콘서트는 보안 검사 기준이 더 느슨한 편이에요. 미국에서는 공연장에 큰 가방을 가지고 들어갈 수 없어요. 팬데믹 이후 대부분의 공연장에서는 투명한 가방만 입장할 수 있게 됐어요. 보통 음식이나 음료도 가져갈 수 없어요. 

However, most concert venues in America have concession stands along with merch tables, where you can buy various snacks and drinks, including alcohol. Also, American artists usually have a couple of different merch booths instead of just one main one. This helps deal with crowding. 

하지만 미국에서는 대부분의 공연장에 다양한 간식과 음료를 파는 매점과 굿즈 판매 부스가 마련되어 있어요. 여기서 술을 포함한 여러 먹거리와 음료를 구매할 수 있죠. 또 미국의 아티스트들은 굿즈 부스를 하나만 설치하지 않고 두세 개 정도 운영해요. 이렇게 하면 혼잡을 줄일 수 있어요.

Once you’re inside the arena, things might also look different. At K-pop concerts, I’m always surprised by the number of signs and lightsticks everyone has. Each group has their own. The fans also have their own chants that they sing along with the artists. 

공연장 안으로 들어가면 또 다른 분위기를 느낄 수 있어요. K-pop 콘서트에서는 관객들이 들고 있는 손팻말과 응원봉이 정말 많아서 깜짝 놀랄 때가 있어요. 그룹마다 고유의 응원봉이 있죠. 팬들이 가수의 노래에 맞춰 함께 외치는 응원법도 있어요. 

In America, we aren’t that big on signs or lightsticks. However, people will shine their smartphone flashlights during slow songs. Americans are also very likely to stand up, dance, scream, cheer, and sing along with their favorite artist. Although some people consider it rude to stand in the seated section, others get too excited. As long as you don’t stand for the whole concert, most people let it go. 

미국에서는 팻말이나 응원봉에 그다지 관심이 없어요. 하지만 느린 곡이 나올 때는 스마트폰 플래시 라이트를 켜곤 합니다. 미국 사람들은 좋아하는 아티스트와 함께 일어나 춤추고, 소리 지르고, 응원하며 노래를 따라 부르는 경우가 많아요. 좌석 구역에서 일어나는 게 매너가 아니라고 생각하는 사람들도 있지만, 너무 신나고 흥분하면 막 일어서기도 하죠. 콘서트 내내 서 있는 게 아니라면 대부분은 그냥 넘어가 줄 거예요. 

One thing for international fans to be careful of is attending rock concerts. These can get rather violent, as fans push to get closer to the stage. While Korean and American concerts aren’t too different, you might be surprised or even offended by some of the behavior of other fans. Just remember, they’re there to enjoy their favorite artist, just like you.

해외 팬들이 록 콘서트에 갈 땐 한 가지 조심해야 할 점이 있어요. 록 공연에서는 팬들이 무대에 가까이 가려고 밀치면서 꽤 과격해질 수 있거든요. 한국과 미국의 콘서트가 크게 다르지 않지만, 다른 팬들의 행동에 놀라거나 불쾌감을 느낄 수도 있습니다. 그런 사람들도 결국 당신과 마찬가지로 좋아하는 아티스트의 공연을 즐기기 위해 왔다는 것만 기억하세요!
